GSM-R is digital mobile communication system which is specifically designed for railway, so the smoothness of the GSM-R network directly affects the safety and efficiency of the railway transportation. The field strength test is very important when the GSM-R system is designed, implemented, optimized and maintained. The paper mainly researches on the GSM-R network field strength test.The paper discusses the main theory of the GSM-R field strength test and what should be tested in the GSM-R network field strength test. We can't grasp the signal's fast fading information if the measurement is implemented according to classic Lee theory. So the appropriate measurement parameters and main index are given based on the characteristics of the GSM-R field strength test. The entire test is plotted to three sections: test preparation, practical test and data process. Some key points, such as the position of the antenna and data process arithmetic and so on, are elaborated.To GSM-R network, some particular requirements are needed in field strength test, so it's necessary to design a field strength test system that's appropriate to GSM-R network. The field strength test system being used presently is confronted by three problems in data process procedure: Too many steps when the original data are preprocessed, the statistic task of the frequency information is too heavy; the function by which the user can grasp the region where the field strength is feeble is hard to understand. According to the characteristics of the GSM-R network, the settlement scheme is made by designing the dialog in which more than one file can be chosen, letting the data files be combined automatically and adding schematic diagram. It also introduces two major coverage mode used in GSM-R network—The Same BTS Site Coverage and The Interlacing BTS Site Coverage.Along with the continuous improvement of the GSM-R network, the characteristics of every GSM-R railway are incessantly changing, too. The field strength test methods implemented under the current circumstances in two most important domestic GSM-R railway—Qinghai-Tibet Railway and DaQin railway are introduced, and the introduction is mostly centered in test condition and test method.
