In recent years, the rapid development of Internet and information industry is accompanied by an increasing importance of the data and the multimedia services, this has resulted an urgent demand for the combination of the two. IP telephone (Voice over IP, VoIP), which takes voice communication over IP network, has come into existence. The fast-growing embedded technology has been playing an increasingly important role in the application of network. The advantages of its cheapness, low power consumption as well as stability have played a decisive role of its potentially huge development space in the future. So the combination of embedded technology and VoIP is a necessary choice and has become a popular topic in soft exchange system.As people did not satisfy with the ordinary data service nowadays, multi-service and multifunctional network equipments became the requirements that people needed. This work mainly contributed on researching and designing a VoIP soft voice exchanging gateway based on embedded technology. It has an extremely important significance in building voice network over a low budget. At present, the widely accepted VoIP control signaling system includes H.323 series of ITU-T and Session Initiate Protocol of the IETF (Session Initiate Protocol, SIP). This work firstly analyzed the H.323 protocol and SIP protocol, and it proposed the VoIP gateway system model based on embedded technology and analyzed the soft system of the model. This work designed the authentication model, accounting model and routing model based on embedded technology, and implemented the models on ARM9 platform, finally achieved a whole embedded VoIP system. To verify this gateway model, this work did function and performance test, and gave out an elementary performance assessment. Besides these, it brought out the future of VoIP based on embedded technology, for instance of applying in wireless self-organization network and wireless VoIP terminal exploitation etc. It provided suggestion and reference for future work and research.The embedded VoIP gateway model achieved the main-function of soft exchange route, provided suggestion for further research and had certain applicable value.
