With the development of economy, we have more requirements on communication. Terminal customers want to enjoy high-quality, high-rate wireless communication with portable wireless devices. Wireless Ad-hoc network can work independently without the involvement of fixed network infrastructure, which is a great advantage over traditional wired network. To achieve performance gains, wireless Ad-hoc networks ask for richer interaction among communication layers, which a strictly layered communication stack can't support. Cross-layer design offers more interfaces among communication layers which improves specific performance. This dissertation focuses on improving the overall throughoutput and MAC layer fairness of wireless Ad-hoc network, including:1. Choose different optimization objectives according to different application situations. In this dissertation, two cross-layer algorithms are offered to improve overall throughoutput and MAC layer fairness respectively.2. Among the seven layers of the communication stack, choose several layers of them to get the final approach.3. Decide the key parameters of these chosen layers. Use these parameters for interaction among layers.4. Mathematical Modelling.5. Design a cross-layer algorithm to solve the mathematical problem.6. Computer simulation.7. Design new communication protocols to adapt the new algorithms. The result of computer simulation shows that cross-layer design can improve the network performance in specific aspects. This dissertation also discusses the next generation wireless communication system, focusing on the emergency call system in WiMAX network.
