How to make use of news agencies to build ideal national image effectively has been an important issue with great creativity and theory value in the modern information society. The public crisis event impacts everyone's interest, so it will easily become the focus of global news agencies and public opinions. Therefore, the public crisis report has a greater impact on the building of national image. Compared with common report, it is more persuasive and more attractive.National image is an integrated concept, referring to the general evaluate and estimate given by the outer public and inner public to the nation, to every issue and every result of the nation. National image has a great force; it reflects the whole national power. While national image, as a reflection the subject given to the object, it is likely not real or totally wrong with the object itself. Therefore, national image could not be the objective reflection of the nation. Today, in the information era, mass communication shapes the whole world. It is not only the channel that public know the changes of the world, but also the way that the national image get into the global society. News agencies convey information by objective reporting. At the same time, through the selection of the fact, they indicate their opinion, and by the chosen of the word, they penetrate their attitude. When the reader accepts the news, they will also accept the reporter's opinion without any awareness. Therefore, the news agencies, or the mass communication has an unusual power. China does not have an ideal national image at the global society. Considering the ideology, the national interest, different values, and news agencies owned by the developed countries, like America, controlling the flow global information, as a result, our national image in the global society is basically built by western developed countries, especially by America. This image is usually beyond the truth.The public crisis report as an important issue has a great influence on many aspects, and it has a tight connection with social economy and politics. Therefore, it plays a significant role in building national image. A great tumult happened in Lhasa on 14th March,2008. Western news agencies paid great attention on this issue; some agencies reported objectively, while some distorted the fact and misrepresented the incident, which badly damaged our national image in the global society and in other people's opinion. This paper collected the corresponding report covered by our Chinese daily paper< Ren Min Daily>, English daily paper, and our website www.sina.com.cn. After summarizing the reporting quantity, headline, key word, content and information source, this paper analyzes how did different new agencies built varied national image through this issue, and then gives some advices on how to improve the reporting strategy, hoping will have some reference value to our government and mass media.
