With the development of information techniques, video compression standards have already been successfully applied in many fields, such as VCD(MPEG-1), video conference(H.263), DVD(MPEG-2), STB(MPEG-2) etc. MPEG-4 as a second generation video coding standard has been used in various fields due to its high performance in compression, especially for entertainment electronics and interactive communications.With the emergence of multi-core processors, the research of embedded media player has become a hot spot. Because of the defects of the designs for player current now, this thesis aims at designing a low-cost and high-performance multi-media player based on Blackfin ADSP-BF561 and uCLinux, by using the decoder of open source XVID to achieve the goal of smooth play for AVI and RealMedia format files.Video compression codec technology, hardware and software platform have been presented in this thesis. The player's hardware and software architecture, software functional module and its implementation, code optimization based on the Blackfin DSP and other technical issues also have been discussed. With the knowledge of MPEG-4 compression coding standard, AVI file format and the skills to use Blackfin ADSP-BF561 instructions and instruction-level optimization, this thesis focused on implement the AVI files demuxer and MPEG-4 decoder instruction-level optimization. In the end of this thesis, unit and integration test for the embedded media player showed that the efficiency of the player after optimized is ten times than that before.
