The theory of chaos and its applications are widely studied over the fields of information, life and environmental science. The control and synchronization of chaotic systems have become hot research topics in non-linear since it was proposed both theoretically and practically in 1990s. And it has attracted much attention in the application of the secure communication. The main contents of the dissertation are as follows:Firstly, considering uncertain parameters in chaotic systems, a sliding mode control (SMC) scheme is designed based on sliding mode control theory. And the synchronization and stability of uncertain chaotic systems can be realized. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated with some illustrative examples.Secondly , based on PC synchronization theory , an approach of sliding mode structure-varying control is designed for a class of uncertain chaotic systems, and then is applied to secure communication for the signals encoding and decoding. Besides, the synchronization of non-identical structure is done and the encoded signal can be recovered accurately under the given controller. Finally, sliding mode control theory is extended to a class of chaotic complex networks coupled with state variables. By designing the specific controller, the synchronization of the complex network with non-identical dynamical nodes is achieved. And simulations are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
