Kandelia candel is a major mangrove specie of the eastern group and is dominant alongSouth China coast. The characteristic of mangrove habitat is high salt and high metalconcentration.Kandelia candel is able to grow in difficult environments of coastal rivers, estuariesand bays.The effect of Cd on mangrove Kandelia candel, the researchers have done lots ofstudies.They involved of physiological changes of photosynthetical system and antioxidantsystem.While proteomics was used to study other stress conditions, global studies for Cd stressresponses are sparse.In the present study,the leaf proteome of Kandelia candel seedlingsexposed to0uM,100uM,200uM,400uM,800uM Cd concentrations for3days wasinvestigated. Treated plants exhibited no visual symptoms appeared after3days.Proteinswere analysed by2-DE followed by MALDI-TOF-MS/MS identification.Additionallyphysiological parameters were monitored during the experiment. Of the more than1000reproducible proteins among all gels,14were statistically upregulated,25weredownregulated in response to Cd,and9alerted complicatedly.A number of changes in theexpression of proteins with various functions were identified,in particular a decreasedabundance of oxidative stress regulating proteins.Furthermore a large number of proteinsinvolved in carbon metabolism showed a decrease in abundance,while proteins involved inremobilizing carbon from other energy sources were upregulated. In conclusion, thenegative effect of Cd could be explained by a deleterious effect on protein expression fromthe primary carbon metabolism and from the oxidative stress response mechanism.
