3-Methylindole, an important nitrogen-containing heterocyclic chemical, has received considerable attention owing to its potential application as intermediate in the fields of biology and medicine. There are many synthetic routes have been developed for the synthesis of 3-Methylindole, however, from the environmental and economic points of view, a novel vapor-phase synthesis of 3-methylindole from aniline and glycerol has been proposed. In this paper, the effects of some promoters of Cu/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst have been investigated and the characterization methods of XRD, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD and TG were used to reveal the relationship between the structure of Cu-based catalysts and their catalytic performances.By the investigation of impregnation sequence, it has been found that Cu/SiO2-Al2O3 promoted catalysts are helpful to improve initial activities of the catalysts, the yield of 46.9%, 46.3% and 44.4% was obtained, especially on the impregnation sequence of ZnO-Cu, Na2O+Cu, K2O-Cu. Considering the results of XRD, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD, it can be obtained that the catalysts doped by sodium, kalium or zincum promoter took disadvantage of the synthesis of 3-methylindole, because of the strong interaction between Cu and SiO2-Al2O3 and the more active sites on the Cu/SiO2-Al2O3 promoted catalysts. From TG and XRD patterns after reaction it can be seen that ZnO, Na2O or K2O as a promoter couldn't improve the stability of the catalyst. After doping with ZnO, Na2O or K2O, which leads to the increase of coking, the XRD result indicated that the sintering of CuO particles are still obvious.Based on the GC-MS analysis, the main side products are N-methylaniline, N-ethylaniline and indole.
