The rapid development of industry is at the price of depleting the resources and polluting the environment. The extensive growth mode which is low efficiency, high pollution and large consumption is widespread in the chemical industry of our country. To solve the problems of shortage of resources and environmental pollution and to improve the competitiveness of industrial economy, the idea "transforming form and adjusting structure" of sustainable development was raised by the government. Thus the cleaner production which changes the mode of treatment after pollution is the practice of the idea of sustainable development. Cleaner production is helpful to improve the production process and is beneficial to both the economy and environment.Betaine, a kind of natural vitamin in the bodies of animals and plants, has many pharmacological effects. It is a byproduct during the production of sucrose by beet and was found and applied in last century. It is now well applied in pharmaceutical industry. However, the waste residue (NaCl) which would harm the environment will be produced in the chemical production process. Thus, this study is a case about cleaner production applied in the process of betaine hydrochloride production in one pharmaceutical company of Jinan. The principle of cleaner production was summarized, the technology of cleaner production was studied and the problems in production process were solved. The content of this study were:1. The discussion of production process, fully utilizing the materialsAfter changing adding sequence of materials, the pressure was lower when adding materials, the dosage of solvent water decreased and the probability of the occurrence of side reaction decreased.2. The usage of waste residue (NaCl)NaCl can react with concentrated sulfuric acid to form Na2SO4 which is one of the raw material of Na2SO4-H2O2-NaCl adduct. When heated, the mixed liquid released HC1 gas. The solvent, diluted hydrochloric acid and mixed liquid of NaC1 were separated. The mixed liquid returned to reaction kettle and continued to reaction, and diluted hydrochloric acid and HC1 gas take part in the reaction of betaine 3. The synthesis of Na2SO4-H2O2-NaCl adductNa2SO4-H2O2-NaCl adduct is one form of solid H2O2, it is easily soluble in water. When it reacts with H2O, atomic oxygen can be released. So it has the same performance of bleaching, sterilization and disinfection as the H2O2 does. NaCl, the waste residue in the process, will react with H2SO4 to form Na2SO4 and HC1, while HC1 will be used to produce betaine. Na2SO4, NaCl and H2O2 will be used to synthesis Na2SO4-H2O2-NaCl adduct.The results of the test and the production show that:the process is feasible from both the prospect of technology and the prospect of economy. Moreover, this treatment process, which is simple, investment-saved and with low costs on operation and management, is especially proper to small and medium enterprises.
