High purity zinc reference electrode because of its cheap, it is widely used in the engineering practice. However, with the use of zinc reference electrode in the project increased potential stability requirements, some products can not meet the national standards.Considering these reasons, the zinc with the purity of 99.999% was chosen as the research material.Based on the objects, the effect of temperature, salinity, the speed of the seawater and microorganism was investigated by the method of electrochemistry. The research result shows that, the animalcule in seawater makes the electricity of the zinc move in the positive direction; potential increases linearly with the increasing temperature; the potential decreases with the increase of salinity; also, the higher the speed of the seawater, the higher of the potential is.In order to improve the electrode stability, the zinc is anodized by galvanostatic polarization. And the best anodic polarization current is 4mA/cm2. The potential of zinc electrode is measured under different temperature, salinity and different flow rate of seawater. The results are compared with unanodized zinc electrode. It is shown that changes of the potential of anodized zinc electrode are not remarkable. The potential stability of zinc reference electrode can be improved by anodizing treatment. The anodic film is studied with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Energy dispersive X-ray(EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used ,and it is shown that the mainly corrosion products of zinc are Zn(OH)2 and ZnO.
