As the world's population expansion and rapid economic development, water pollution has become an important restricting factor in sustainable society. Water treatment technology has got more and more attention. Cationic polyacrylamide flocculant is the most common water treatment chemicals, and has a wide scope of application. With the improvement of polymerization process and the increasing flocculation performance, copolymer products receive much concern owing to the charge degree controllable, charge well distributed and easy to production. The optimum process conditions of synthesis of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) using photo-initiation polymerization system by acrylamide (AM) and methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) were studied. The article studied the effect of the total quality concentration of monomer, n(DMC):n(AM), pH of the polymerization system, the dosage of photo initiator, initiation time and reaction temperature on product performance. The composition and structure of the copolymers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR).Finally, kaolin and slime flocculation characteristics of CPAM polymers were studied. In order to investigate the optimal conditions of synthesis of CPAM, flocculation performance parameters were evaluated by different types of flocculants, different amount of flocculants, cationic degree and intrinsic viscosity respectively (the deposition velocity, light transmission rate as target). The results showed that the optimal polymerization conditions were as following: the addition of tween was 1%, the total quality concentration of monomer was 32%, n(DMC): n(AM)=1:5, pH=5.5, the dosage of photo initiator was 40μL, initiation time was 60 min, reaction temperature was 20℃and the aging time was 24 hours. The cationic degree of the product was 15.27% when the intrinsic viscosity was 548 mL·g-1, AM residual monomer is less than 0.05%. By studying the flocculation performance of CPAM, it shows that:the flocculation performance of CPAM is rather than the French commercial-grade CPAM, which is better than PAM, HP AM and AmPAM. Through small experiment obtain the product which meeting the requirements (intrinsic viscosity, cationic degree), by analysis the reasons resulting in the differences molecular weight. It indicated that light-initiated polymerization techniques used for the industrial synthesis of polyacrylamide is available.Figure [19] table [21] reference [50]...
