Because of the urgent request for the environmental protection and energy conservation, the lightweight concern has became a new hotspot in vehicle design. This thesis studies the numerical simulation of thin plate butt-welded joint welding process by using Elasto-plastic mechanics theories and ABAQUS finite element analysis. The lengthened ellipsoid equal density heat source is chosen as the heat souce model used for dynamically simulating the whole process of thin plate butt-welded joint welding. Special concern is given to the nonlinear relationship between temperature and thermal and/ physical properties of material, and the coupled calculation of temperature field and stress/strain field under different material, thickness and heat input conditions is finally obtained.The paper first simulates the deformation of thin plate butt-welded joint welding process using SM570 and AISI20. The result is that the deformation is less using SM570 instead of AISI20 in the same model and welding process. As a result, it is suggested that using SM570 instead of AISI20 in the vehicle lightweight design is possible.Then the paper simulates the deformation tendency of thin plate butt-welded joint using SM570 and AISI20 with two heat input conditions. Through the comparative analysis, no matter what the heat input changed, the thinner the plate is, the larger the deformation.Finally the paper simulates the deformation of thin plate butt-welded joint using SM570 whose thickness was 2mm and AISI20 whose thickness was 3mm.The conclusion was that the deformation was less using SM570 instead of AISI20. Therefore, when selecting material in the car body welding structure, SM570 might be consider to use instead of AISI20 in order to reduce the car weight. The conclusion provided theoretical guidance on the car lightweight design.
