Lightweight is the tendency of manufacturing industry. And the trend is being accelerated especially in nowadays of emphasizing green manufacturing. Electromagnetic forming(EMF) is needed by aerospace industry which is developing fast. But lightweight materials such as aluminum are difficult to shape, a problem waiting to be solved. EMF, a super speed and high energy forming technology, provides a way to solve the problem. The research and applying of sheet metal EMF will promote the using of lightweight materials.Meanwhile, EMF needs instruments for adding. And flat field shaper is an important one, which concentrates the magnetic field to smaller areas to make the sheet forming or orthopedic among small areas. By means of field shaper, the scope of EMF is enlarged and the forming property of the sheet metal is improved. The diversity of EMF is realized by designing the field shaper according to different demand.The principle of field shaper in sheet metal EMF was proposed in this paper by 2D and 3D simulation of the FEA software ANSYS. The relative diameter, thickness and the diameter of the central hole of the field shaper effecting on the distribution and intensity of the magnetic force on the sheet metal was obtained by 2D simulation. Then the way of enhancing the efficiency of the field shaper and optimizing the sheet forming was promoted based on that. 3D simulation was taken to analyzed the principle of field shaper and the influence of the slot. Based on that, sheet metal EMF was executed to verify the result of sheet forming with field shaper and the role of concentrating the magnetic field. Finally, the improvement of field shaper was done by changing the central hole of the field shaper. Basic study was conducted and the way to improve the performance of the field shaper was pointed out.
