Nanocomposites of montmorillonite/natural rubber (MMT/NR) and rectorite/natural rubber (REC/NR) were synthesized by emulsion copolymerization, when surfactant (10phr) was added to improve the interfacer. The Influence of kind of clay and surfacant on structure and properties of clay/NR nanocomposites were studied. Compared with MMT/NR, the REC/NR nanocomposites exhibited high degree of crosslinking, high modulus, high tensile strength and high tear strength. The wet skid resistance of REC/NR nanocomposites was improved, while the cutting and chip properties was decreased, and the fatigue lives almost remain unchanged. When the surfancant was taken as the substitute of natural rubber, the comprehensive performance was improved, and the abrasive resistance was much higher.The application study of REC/NR is also explored. Different nano-fillers were introduced into the REC/NR nanocomposites, and the comprehensive properties and structure were investigated and explained.Properties and structures of REC and carbon black (N330) together reinforced NR were studied. It was showed that cutting and chip properties, wet skidding resistance and the abrasive resistance was improved by adding different amount N330. When 15phr-20phr N330 was introduced into the REC/NR nanocomposites, the cutting and chip, the abrasive resistance was improved 48% and 20%, respectively, the wet skid resistance did not change much, and the dynamic heating was getting higher with the increase of N330 amount.Then the influence of silica on the properties and structure on the REC/NR nanocomposites which were filled with 20phr REC were investigated. It turned out that cutting and chip, wet skidding resistance and the abrasive resistance was improved by adding different amount silica. When 20phr silica was introduced into the REC/NR nanocomposites, the cutting and chip was improved 50% while the abrasive resistance was improved 27% when 15phr silica was added, besides the wet skidding resistance of REC20/Si20 was raised by 5%, and dynamic heat production increased too.MMT was one kind of layer silica, which gets a larger form factor, and it could be used to improved the resistance of crack growth. The influence of the MMT on fatigue life was studied and it showed that with a small amount MMT replacing the carbon black, the fatigue lives of the materials were increased, and 3phr is the best amount. At the same time, with increasing of MMT content, MMT/ESBR nanocomposites performed higher mechanical properties and the best dynamic fatigue properties was found at 5-10phr MMT content.
