Hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) have spurred growing interest because of their tailored structures, low density, high surface area, thermal insulation and electronic properties. As a result, HCSs have been investigated for large numbers of applications such as lithium batteries, gas energy storage, supports of catalytic, active-material encapsulation, drug delivery, adsorbents and lubricants. The template method is considered to be the best way to control the size of hollow spheres by adjusting the diameter of the template cores, and the product could be in large scale. Therefore, an easy method to prepare HCSs with controlled morphology by using organic compounds as templates was suggested in this work. This method combines the advantages of template and pyrolysis methods. Phenolic formaldehyde (PF) resin is used as carbon source and polystyrene (PS) spheres are used as templates in the synthesis procedure. Hollow carbon hemisphere (HCHs) and hollow carbon sphere (HCSs) with porous shell were derived by carbonization of the PF/PS composite spheres and have regular morphology. Through this method, we can not only control the morphology of HCSs, also the complex post-processing of removing the template cores after carbonization is avoided. We also prepared highly dispersed Pt supported on HCHs electrocatalyst by ethylene glycol reduction method. The Pt/HCHs electrocatalyst were characterized by different test methods, it show that the electrocatalyst thus prepared show a high dispersion of Pt nanoparticles, with diameters in the 2~5nm range and a very narrow particle size distribution. These catalytic systems show a better electrocatalytic properties than that of the Pt nanoparticles supported on Vulcan XC-72 (Pt/Vulcan XC-72) system. It is considered that the special structure of HCHs played an important role on improving the performance of the catalyst.
