As a new type of smart materials, shape memory polymers (SMP) have a great reversible deformation under external excitation. The composite materials and structures based on SMP, combining the sensing and controlling functionin and load bearing ability, will have great futures in the application in the space self-deployable structures.In this paper the mechanical and shape memory properties of the SMP epoxy were characterized. The shape memory composites reinforced by the chopped carbon fiber, carbon black and carbon fiber clothes with the SMP matrix were studied respectively. All the research works can be concluded as follows:1. The mechanical properties and shape memory properties of shape memory polymer resin were studied, the stress-strain relationship, the relationship between elastic modulus and the temperature and the glass transition temperature were obtained at different temperatures.2. The thermal-mechanical properties, shape memory properties and the relationship between resistivity and carbon fiber content ratio of the chopped carbon fiber reinforced shape memory composite materials were studied throughly. The experimental resoults revealed that the chopped carbon fiber can significantly enhance the mechanical properties. The conductivity of the material increased greatly and the shape of the composite can be drived by electric heating.3. The thermal-mechanical properties, shape memory properties of the carbon black reinforced shape memory composite materials were studied throughly. On the test resoults, the mechanical properties and shape memory properties of the composite materials were affected a little by carbon black ratio but the deformability of the material and the maximum strain rate were increased greatly and the maximun strain was about 55%.4 The carbon fiber clothes reinforced composite materials were studied, the relationship between load and deflection in different temperatures, compressed-deployable characteristics and shape memory performance under different deflection were studied to verify its feasibility of application in deployable structures.
