Worldwide production of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) and their commonapplication has resulted in their widespread presence in cosmetics such asprefumes,lotions and so on. Recent years,the impact of phthalic acid estersare concerned with the promulgation of the EU REACHs Directive and theUSA CPSIA Directive. Phthalic acid esters become a very important test.The optimum pretreatment conditions were obtained by optimizingsolid-phase microextraction of liquid cosmetics and cream cosmetics. Therecoveries for8PAEs in liquid cosmetics were between70.19%108.21%with precision of2.15%13.92%RSD(n=5). The recoveries for8PAEs incream cosmetics were between81.94%122.12%with precision of2.29%16.01%RSD(n=5). Actual demands can be met by the method.Two quantitative methods were compared,with standard working curvemethod and isotopic mass dilution method applied in cream cosmetics. Therecoveries for8PAEs by standard working curve method were between81.94%122.12%with precision of2.29%16.01%RSD(n=5). Therecoveries for8PAEs by isotopic mass dilution method were between80.15%108.05%with precision of2.96%9.85%RSD(n=5). It was suggested that precision can be improved by isotopic mass dilution method.The parameters of GC-MS were optimized for determination of8PAEs.By optimized parameters,8PAEs could be well separated. Phthalic acid estersshows a good linear relationship (r2were between0.9833-0.9990) in the rangeof102000μg·Kg-1. The limits of detection (3S/N) for the methods of8PAEsranged from0.7-75.0μg·Kg-1, and the limits of quantitation (10S/N) rangedfrom2.1-250.0μg·Kg-1.The method established were applied to detect8PAEs in12cosmeticproducts on sale with satisfactory results. It was suggested that the methodwas suitable for the analysis of8PAEs in cosmetics.
