The soft soil distribution range is broad in the coastal, the area along the river and the interior lake district in our country.The most soft soil are silt and silt clay, and there is silt mixed sand layer in the south minority area. With the rapid development of the highway construction, the highway will increase day by day in the soft soil area.Constructing the embankment on the soft foundation, the problems of deformation and stability become particularly prominent, which deformation is more complex. Under the embankment the deformation of foundation soil includes vertical deformation and horizontal deformation, that is, the settlement and the lateral displacement. The lateral displacement of the foundation soil can not be ignored, it not only leads to the deformation of subgrade settlement and reduces its stability, but also produces horizontal load, horizontal deformation and even destruction on the adjacent building (structures), which impact is more significant on complex structures and lateral displacement. Therefore, studying the law of lateral displacement, calculating and analyzing lateral displacement, controlling and preventing lateral displacement and improving the level of stability control and forecast are worthy of further study, which are also useful complement to current research on lateral displacement of the soft foundation.Therefore, the existing settlement computation methods which consider lateral displacement are sumarized in this paper. According to field data of the different regions, the settlement modification formula for some areas based on decisive factors of the settlement of foundation-volumetric strain and lateral displacement is proposed, which considers lateral deformation of soft foundation.Secondly, the using method and limitations of the inclinometer are analyzed. Referencing the research methods of passive pile, the interaction between inclinometer pipe and soil under embankment is studied and the new calculation method of displacements of inclinometer tube in any depth in the limit state is given, which can predict the maximum lateral displacement of soft foundation in some extent. Then, based on the FLAC, the impact factors of the lateral displacement of soft soil foundation in the Dongting Lake area are analyzed using the method of mechanical analysis and numerical calculation.Finally, according to the field data of the Yueyang test section and lab tests, the distribution of soft soil deformation of Yueyang test section and errors caused by Inclinometer tube deflection and reverse in the lateral displacement field tests are analyzed.
