ABSTRACT:The paper presents a bus passenger trip origin-destination (O-D) matrix estimation methodology using real-time GPS and smart card data. Accurate passenger O-D matrix estimation is very critical to transit system planning, operation and optimization, especially for the congested metropolitan area such as the City of Beijing and the City of Shanghai. With the traffic demand dramatically increased in China's metropolitan areas in the past 5 years, many transit system need to be updated and the operation needs to be optimized. The bus system is still the most important choice for commuter and visitor trips in Chinese metropolitan areas. Transit planning and operation associations are seeking a more accurate and dynamic methodology to estimate the bus passenger trip O-D distribution to provide more reliable bus line timetables, increase the ridership, attract more commuters from private vehicles to alleviate the worsening traffic congestions.Traditional O-D matrix estimation method the greatly rely on the existing traffic count data. For a metropolitan area in China, the time consuming process of traffic volume collection can not meet the transit system development. Based on the analysis of various public traffic flow OD matrix estimation both at home and abroad the methodology presented in this paper dynamically estimates bus passenger demand O-D matrix using GPS equipments and smartcard data. This method does not require traditional O-D investigation; get bus information more efficiently and safely. The GPS system reports the real-time position and speed of the vehicles, so as to provide reliable real-time data for public traffic flow OD matrix estimation, improved the accuracy of OD matrix estimation. In this way, the main object of study for the Beijing Public Transport operators, using Real-Time GPS and Smart Card devices of bus, use SQL server database, will bus operating routes coverage divided into different zones, building matrix model estimation, by bus passengers travel distance characteristics to establish site transform coefficient of passenger flow, the results are used to optimize Beijing transit capacity allocation, provides beneficial effect. This method can satisfy the precision of city bus system operation needs in Beijing, Shanghai and other large cities, avoid the multifarious and large-scale OD investigation, avoid the multifarious and large-scale OD investigation, guarantee the timeliness of processing and using data, provides the basis for transportation planning and traffic structure adjustment.
