Insulation oil is widely applied in transformer, electric power capacitor and other high voltage electrical equipment. The insulation oil has low viscosity, low freezing point, high flashing point, high crushing strength and stability excellent features. Its main effects are insulation, cooling, arcing. With the effect of oxygen, humidity, sunshine, the insulation performance will decreases. Especially in transformer working process, it will generate a large quantity of heat, the heat or discharge will make the transformer oil produce gas, water and metal microelements. This will not only reduce the insulating ability of insulation oil, but also greatly reduce its extinguish arc ability, accelerating the contactor ablation, further polluting insulating oil, making transformer or other oil filled electrical equipment internal appear latent faults, affecting equipment normal operation. The paper mainly discussed how to detect the composition of gases solved in the transformer oil, and find out the importance of detecting these feature gases. It could judge malfunction's types, level and trend of development through analysis the composition of gases in the insulation oil at different stage. According with research achievements of internal and external, simulated discharge result of transformer, discharging for transformer, contrast gas chromatography technology which be applied generally, we take advantage of spectrum elements and spectrum detection technique to do test and analysis for the oil sample, do qualitative analysis for the mixture gas:CO (carbon monoxide), CO2 (carbon dioxide), CH4 (methane), C2H6 (ethane), C2H4 (vinyl), C2H2 (acetylene), H2 (hydrogen), micro water combined the characteristic absorption peak of IR spectrum of main fault feature gas. The result showed that use the FTIR technique can effective analysis the composition of gas solved in the transformer oil, and don't consume any gas, so can detect latent problem in the equipment quickly.
