Trains run must be with the aid of rail/wheel adhesion and brake, the largest adhesion force is limited by the adhesion coefficient (friction coefficient) of contact zone between wheel/rail. Therefore the adhesion of wheel/rail is closely related to high-speed railway operator with basic research. Wheel-rail adhesion research will improve the use of high-speed train traction, ensure the high-speed railroad's operation safety. The adhesion experiments of wheel/rail were carried out using a JD-1 wheel/rail simulation testing machine under different medium conditions. The effects of oil, water and sanding on adhesion coefficient of wheel/rail has been studied in details. Furthermore, the effect of different medium on adhesion characteristic of wheel/rail has been analyzed. Main conclusions are draw as follows:1. With an increasing axle load, the adhesion coefficient of wheel/rail would increase under oil, oil and water mixture, oil, water and sand mixture conditions.Uner the same axle load condition, the adhesion coefficient under oil, water and sand mixture is largest. The adhesion coefficient is smallest with mixed oil and water.2. With an increasing speed, the adhesion coefficient of wheel/rail decreases under oil, water and sanding conditions.3. The adhesion force of wheel/rail is small under water and oil conditions. The magnetic field can increase obviously adhesion force of wheel/rail under water and oil conditions. The increase rate of adhesion force under water condition exceeds 20% and the increase rate of adhesion force under oil condition is 50%.4. Under water and oil conditions, the speed has no obvious effect on adhesion force of wheel/rail when magnetic field is used.5. The surface roughness of wheel/rail has a obvious influence on adhesion characteristic under water and oil conditions. With the decrease of surface roughness, the adhesion coefficient of wheel/rail has a slight drop.
