In China, the arch bridge is one of the main types of highway bridge, making a proportion of 61% or so. In west , this number is above 80%. However, compared with girder bridge , the research about arch bridge reinforcement is not mature enough, and the research literature is relatively few, especially about GFRP as resistance and enhance layer applying to new arch bridge structure is less. Therefore, a deeper research on arch bridge new structural form and reinforcement is of great application value.According to destructive experiments of six piece GFRP composite arch that reinforced with GFRP by different paste form ( I-shaped, u-shaped and annular-shaped ) and different paste position ( whole-pasted and local-pasted ) and one piece of common concrete arch, the author analyses their mechanical properties such as load deflection curves, stiffness, bearing capacity, destruction forms, etc. The result shows: the GFRP composite arch shows a much better stiffness, bearing capacity, deformation properties and crack-resistance; and the cracking load values of the arch which were reinforced with GFRP increased by 21.7%~69.6%, the ultimate load values increased by 68.6%~142.8%. Under the same condition, the mechanical properties of wholly-pasted GFRP composite arch is better than that of local-pasted GFRP composite arch; and the annular-shaped and u-shaped GFRP composite arch is obviously better than the I-shaped GFRP composite arch.Based on the experiment researches and analyses, a finite element modeling calculation has been done on the GFRP composite arch. According to comparison analysis of experiments and numerical results, the rationality and correctness of the model has been verified. And on this basis, the author puts forward a finite element calculating method about the GFRP composite arch ultimate load. The results show that the proposed criteria about GFRP composite arch ultimate load is effective, and the result is coincide well with the experimental ultimate load. The research results and conclusions raised in this paper has certain theoretical meaning and reference value on the reinforcement of the similar arch bridge type.
