With further study of hybrid cars, a new smaller and more efficient motor has been became an important field in the world. Flux-switching Permanent Magnet (PM) synchronous motor (FSPM) is a newly variable-speed motor, with advantages of both Permanent Magnet motor and SR motor. In this paper, the general study of FSPM is based on the structure and theory about FSPM both home and abroad. Combined experiment, theoretical analysis and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), the paper is to study the effect of different PM material and asymmetric air-gap structure on FSPM.The structure of three-phase 12/10 poles FSPM, principle of power electronic resolver, principle of inverter and transistors'turn-on sequence and control strategy is explained, and some new structure motors are introduced. Then some sizing equations about the motor are deserved, some of the equations are based on d-q axis theory. The effect of ferrite magnets and rare-earth magnets that located in stator on FSPM are investigated in theory, combined with FEA, and Ansoft Maxwell is the candidate. The method how to select appropriate PMs in different working background is presented. There are several kinds of 3D variable magnetic field existed in the motor, in order to simplify the analysis, the idea of FE analysis is introduced and the permeances equations are obtained. According to Thevenin theorem, the simplified equivalent magnetic circuit is then deserved. At last, the effect of asymmetric air-gap on FSPM is investigated. At last, a general procedure how to design FSPM is presented, considered the limitation of the power electronic inverter besides the interaction between FSPM and power electronic inverter.
