With the extended implementation of the strategy of"West to East Power Transmission, Mutual Supply Between South and North, Nationwide Interconnection"and the gradually formed interconnection of market-oriented bulk power grids, our power systems have already entered the generation of large units, extra high voltage, very large scale, long distance, ac-dc hybrid transmission. Series capacitor compensation technology is one of the economical and effective countermeasures for enhancing the power transmission limit and improving system stability. However, application of series capacitor compensation may result in Subsynchronous Resonance(SSR) which leads to adverse torsional interactions and endangers the safe and stable operation of power systems. Research of SSR is of practical significance and engineering value.This paper mainly studies the application of STATCOM for damping SSR in series compensated ac systems. On the base of introducing mechanism of SSR, This paper puts forward the scheme of Subsynchronous modulation of phase angle , designs the Subsynchronous controller and examines the efficiency of STATCOM controller for damping SSR in the IEEE first benchmark system .And then, the electromagnetic transient simulation platform of Jinjie system mainly based on PSCAD/EMTDC is established. On this platform, taking typical running conditions for example, calculate the generator speed difference and transient shaft torque of the system under the condition of three-phase faults, compare the results of no control, voltage control , average speed supplementary control and modal-speed supplementary control sheme, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. Then, through the comparation of results of different places of STATCOM, determine the best installing place of STATCOM. Finally, from basic characteristics and inhibitory effect to SSR, comparatively analyze the advantages of STATCOM to SVC and indicate that STATCOM is a feasible proposal of SSR suppression.
