Satellite system design and optimization is important to improve satellite system design. And it is very significant to enhance the satellite performance and to estimate the cost. The system parameters will play an important role in the satellite system performance, reliability, cost, and development difficulty after the confirmation of the satellite type. Due to the fuzziness and subjectivity of system design objects, there are many uncertainties of the design parameters during the satellite system design. To improve the satellite design, processing uncertainties with cloud models has been investigated. Then the theory has been employed to deal with the system design and optimization of the earth observation satellite.Firstly, the uncertainty theory is studied. Some basic conceptions of the cloud-based optimization of uncertainties are represented. The definitions and classifications of uncertainties have been given.Secondly, the basic theory of cloud models and the mathematical methods to produce the virtual cloud which contains all the system uncertainty information are studied. It is sure that the cloud models can not only deal with the various incomplete parameters but also reduce the influence of the incomplete knowledge from the optimization and uncertainties. Then the concepts of the confidence values of the cloud models have been given, it provides a theoretical basis for uncertainty optimization.Thirdly, the mathematical optimization model and optimization program with uncertainties have been founded after combining the cloud conditions with classic optimization design. Then simulation shows the influence of sample points and confidence regions to optimization. And the values of sample points and confidence regions have been given.Finally, taking the earth observation satellite for example, the application of the cloud models dealing with satellite system uncertainties has been investigated. According to the requirements of the earth observation satellite's missions, the system scheme of preliminary design has been proposed. And system design and uncertainty models are also established. The result proves that cloud models are feasible and effective in handling the uncertainties of satellite systems. This article presents the satellite system design characteristics and content, and the development of the uncertainty optimization design methods for satellite system both at home and abroad. Then the cloud model theory of handling uncertainties has been investigated. The method has been used in the design of satellite systems. The author's views and prospects have been given about the application of the uncertainty optimization design of satellite systems.
