With energy supplies such as oil and gas becoming more and more valuable, more and more attention to the storage of energy materials is paid in countries all of the world, energy storage using salt caves has been extensively applied in many countries in the world. The salt rock in China is layered distributed, the thickness of individual layers is thin, and there are interlayers of mudstone or gypsum in the salt rock deposit. To construct salt caverns in such geological environment the mechanical interaction between salt rock and interlayers must be considered that plays an important role to the whole stability of the layered system. This paper attempts to analyze stress and displacement of the bedded salt rock surrounding caverns using elasticity theory and layered system theory. The displacement method was used, the Love displacement function which is available for the space axial symmetrical problem was chosen, the analytical expressions of stress and displacement for general space axial symmetrical situation and hence for layered medium were deduced, and the solution was gained after tediously long analysis. Finally, numerical model was established, simulations to the gas storage cavern in bedded salt rock were carried out, and the characteristics of such cavern were studied, including the maximum and minimum and effective stresses, horizontal displacement distribution.
