Wind energy has great value for both theoretical and applied research because of its advantages of mature technology and rich in resource among more and more attention on renewable energy. Grid-connected wind farm is the most effective way for the utilization of wind energy in large scale, but because of the randomness and intermittence of wind speed, the wind farm has a large fluctuating wind power. so with the rapid development of wind turbines installed in wind farms the fluctuation of grid-connected wind farms bring to the power system will be more remarkable; moreover, the low voltage problem will bring heavy influence to the stabilization and economy of grid when the short circuit fault of outside grid occurs.At present, there are two ways to resolve above-mentioned question, which is improving output character of wind turbine itself and applying energy storage system to smooth the output of wind farm. But as the finite technology of wind turbine, the latter way applying energy storage system to improve the character of gird-connected wind farm will on study in this paper with both the theoretical and simulation method.Firstly, the development condition and prospective of wind power generation on domestic and overseas are stated, and the problem of wind energy generation in our country is also analyzed. Besides, the feasibility of applying energy storage system to smooth the output power of wind farm and enhance the operation ability of wind farm when fault happens.Secondly, the dynamic character of doubly-fed induction generator(DFIG) which include the basic working theory and mathematic model and control strategy. The dynamic process simulations of grid-connected wind farm have been studied.Besides, this paper discusses that applying energy storage system to smooth power fluctuation of wind farms, which includes the mode of energy storage system applied into grid-connected wind farm and the control strategy, a simulation which take a example of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) to smooth the power fluctuation of grid-connected wind farm has been analyzed. and the simulation results indicate the availability of control strategy, it also shows that the effect corresponds the standard of power grid. In the end, the respond character of grid-connected wind farm under the short-circuit fault of outside grid is analyzed, the control strategy of applying energy storage system to enhance operation ability of grid-connected wind farm under fault has also been studied, as well as the effect of the strategy has been simulated in the environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK, and the simulation result shows that the effect of the control strategy is obvious.
