With the development of China power business, and the significant increasement of power capacity, the application of XLPE cable is more and more wide. To ensure the safety of power network, especially for major route, the insulation detection technique for XLPE cable has been paid more and more attention. This article based on existing study analyzed the implement of popular insulation detection technique.First of all, this article analyzed the situation of EHV XLPE cable application and common type of insulation defect, focused on the reason and development process for each type of insulation defect. Then it introduced the main principles and features of current popular detection technique for the insulation of XLPE cable, including partial discharge and optical fiber thermometry. Then the Off-line partial discharge test and on-line optical fiber thermometry system for a 220kV cable project is as an example. This article also paid attention on analysis the result of the partial discharge test and optical fiber thermometry application in practical project; compared the effectiveness; advantages and disadvantages between 2 test techniques in actual operation environment. At last, this article concluded the practicality and development of mainstream detection technique for the insulation of XLPE cable.
