The growing demand for more efficient marine transportation has already produced significant changes in ship sizes, types, and production methods. It is hard for to meet the times'requirement, if the designers only utilize their experience and simple formulas of ship classification rules. Thus, a rational-based method, which relies on computer technique and optimization strategy very much, has been proposed. Nevertheless, its high computation cost constrains its application in the practical design field. To solve this problem, in this paper two remarkable methods have been proposed.To begin with, the thoughts and characters of the rational-based design method have been introduced as well as its comparison with the traditional design method. Besides, the research carried out by domestic and foreign researchers on reducing its computation cost have been introduced specifically.Furthermore, based on the study of multi-level analysis method, a new multi-level analysis method has been introduced on the basis of superelement in this paper. This method cannot only reduce the computation cost sharply, but it can also avoid the limit of minimum length of module and improve the accuracy of the multi-level analysis.Moreover, the advanced thought of utilizing the technique of support vector machine to metamodeling and replacing the exact numerical analysis codes, which are high time cost, has been introduced in the rational-based design method in this paper, which can significantly reduce the optimization's time cost.In order to testify the efficiency and feasibility of these two methods, an optimization of the scantlings of a 3100TEU container ship's mid-ship has been carried out with these two methods. The results tell that these two methods have significant effect in reducing the time cost of rational-based design method in the ship structural design and increasing its efficiency greatly.
