The object of this thesis is the sculpture of ornaments on Daoist buildings in Dali. According to the distinct geographical environment, the history and culture of Daoism and the custom in Dali, I have summarized Daoism and the current situation of its building, and taken the carving on its architectural ornaments as the starting point to sort out its decorative parts, i.e. the sculpture ornament of railing, plinth, the construction part, doors and windows, categorizing it from the contents of the ornamental subject s and modeling methods. All these differ from the Daist buildings in the central region to a certain degree, carrying intense regional and national characteristics.Firstly, I have sketched out the introduction to the Dali Daoism and its development. The development of Daoism in Dali is prosperous and the number of its buildings is comparatively greater than other areas, for Dali has a long-term communication with the central plains. Next, I have discovered the structure of Dali's Daoist buildings is characterized by the configuration of small size, symmetrical courtyard in accordance with the mountains, most free courtyard and single-entry yard compared with the Daoist buildings in he central plains. Thirdly, I analyze the influencing elements of ornaments of the Dali Daoist buildings, principally the regional culture and geography, the regional folk-customs, and the regional religious belief. Fourthly, I have summed up the carving of different decorative parts from the perspectives of the subject and modeling method on the basis of the definition of "ornament" and the analysis of its essential features and the sense and types of sculpture. They mainly fall into:①The sculpture ornament of railings, including column and breast board;②the sculpture ornament of plinth;③the sculpture ornament of constructional parts, including girders, davits, brackets, and decorated brackets;④the sculpture ornament of doors and windows, including lattice doors, ordinary window sill, round window sill and decorative open windows. Fifthly, I have dissected the appearance of the sculpture ornament beauty in the Dali Daoist buildings, reached its aesthetical features, namely, the beauty of various subjects, the beauty of modeling changes, the beauty of regional characteristics, the beauty of exquisite workmanship. Last but not the least, I have discussed the value reflection of the Dali Daoist buildings and its sculpture, the preservation and inheritance, posing some basic ideas. Inheritance of the carvingart in themain are:first, the aesthetic meaning of heritage. Second, the transmission technology. Third, the national cultural heritage.
