Most of the ocean engineering structures build in the unshaded sea areas and they are often subjected to the bigger wave forces. Therefor, how to determine the wave forces to the oceanstructures becomes a more concern. The pier column structures of bridges in offshore areas is a more typical ocean engineering structure.lt is high academic and practical value to study the effector mechanism of wave forces to the pier structures of bridges in offshore areas in improving the safety and durability of bridges and controlling the occurrence of severe damage.The current using wave theories for wave load calculations are mainly linear wave theory, nonlinear wave theory and random wave theory, which all has its applicability and shortcomings. It's seem that wave forces acted on piers could be calculated by linear theory except the slender component controlled by the drag force after comparative analysis. The small diameter pile column whose D/L<0.2 is calculated by Morison equation uses linear wave theory according to slightly hypothesis, while the large scale structures whose relative scale greater than 0.2 can be calculated by the diffraction theory.Take a bridge in fujian for example, it uses the numerical simulation method to calculate the maximum force on the pier and wave forces on each point, then comparative analyzed with the experience formula and test results. It can be perceived by contrast curve that although theoretical values are far less than that of experimental values, numerical simulation value curve is similar to experimental value's. It indicate that numerical simulation could better react the actual ocean situations, while the values should multiply certain coefficients. Empirical formula values and numerical simulation results are in good agreement, it indicate that Morison equation that is still the basis of wave force calculation. Therefor, before the design of the bridge pier, it should be comparatively analyzed the numerical simulation calculation values with the experimental and experience formula values, which could reach the most advantageous design values.Finally, summarized the full text and raised the further research direction.
