With the increasing of residential electricity and electrical fire accidents increasingly serious also, fault arc as one of the important causes of electric fire accident has aroused extensive attentions. The conventional breakers or protection device are unable to provide comprehensive protection of arc fault, so the study of arc fault characteristic to propose arc fault diagnosis method has important significance.This paper based on the data of experiments, devised an arc fault experiment platform, including the fault arc generator, a data acquisition unit, experiment platform control system, and finished each part of the software and hardware design. Based on the experiment platform author did several typical load experiments, collected a large number of experiment data, established the arc fault database, and laid important foundation for the data analysis.Through the analysis on the experimental data, summed up the linear load and nonlinear load arc fault characteristics, and puts forward two kinds of arc fault diagnosis methods: For the linear load fault arc typical characteristics-"zero current", put forward diagnosis method based on the change rate of the arc fault current, which using mathematical statistics method, and extracting the change rate of arc fault current characteristics to achieve linear load arc fault diagnosis; Aiming at the feature of nonlinear load arc fault current with high frequency harmonic, put forward arc fault diagnosis method which based on the detail signal fluctuation analysis, using the wavelet analysis theory extract band feature, using the grid fractal theory to quantify the detail signal fluctuation, indirectly extracted high frequency harmonic content in current, and achieve nonlinear load arc fault diagnosis.
