Symmetry is one of the most important properties in mechanical systems, and the theory of symmetry groups is a very useful mathematical tool for symmetry analysis. With summarizing the theory of symmetry groups of images, this article is for the purpose of studying the symmetry groups of mechanical parts and its effect on manufacturing. Every mechanical part can be considered as an image, so it can be described as a special symmetry group, the action effects of symmetry elements in the parts and the influence factors of symmetry groups on the technical performance of mechanical parts is studied.Consider the manufacturing of mechanical parts, with the analysis of the relationship between the point symmetry groups and the total angle of rotation of parts, this paper draw the interval distribution of the point groups of mechanical parts. As to improve the product assemblability, a method how to improve structure of parts by changing the point groups is proposed. By summarizing a variety of the symmetry requirements of the part structure in processing and analyzing hundreds of point groups of parts, the elective tendency of point groups in processing is studied. Meanwhile, for the layout of sheet metal, the relationship between the outline of the layout unit and the translation group of the layout to achieve no-waste arrangement is drawn, which can provide guidance for layout design.This paper is a new attempt, as the theory of symmetry groups is introduced to the study of mechanical symmetry in this paper, it also has some reference significance for other areas of mechanical symmetry, and designers may be inspired from this paper.
