Along with the fast growing of the Shipbuilding Industry in our country, large-scale shipbuilding cranes have been widely used, taking important responsibility of assembling parts and handling. In fact, shipbuilding cranes always work in hostile environments, and which they handle are usually large-scale yet heavy metal structures. As a result, once the metal structures of a shipbuilding crane fail, not only the whole crane would be destroyed, but the shipbuilding yard would be seriously damaged. In order to ensure safety during working, keep the fee of maintenance of metal structure low, the research on methods of safety assessment for metal structures of shipbuilding crane has been one of critical themes for researchers who focus on crane detection and ordinary management.The full text is divided into six sections. Section one briefly elaborated the research goal and significance, and made general narration on the domestic and foreign related development in the field of safety assessment for shipbuilding crane.Section two analyzes several theories and methods concerning safety assessment. Different characters of these theories are studied, and according to the special characters of shipbuilding crane, suitable methods are prompted.Section three focuses on the characters of shipbuilding crane, from its working environment to its loads. In addition, factors that potentially have influence on the safety of metal structures are researched and regular patterns are summarized.In section four, a safety method based on Fuzzy Theory and Analytical Hierarchy Process is put forward. In this method, potential factors are considered comprehensively, and their state values are calculated scientifically. Furthermore, weighting factors of different factors is presented under the help of specialists. As a result of safety assessment work, a numerical result of the whole structure will be obtained, which provides reference information for crane management and maintenance decisions.In section five, an Expert System for Safety Assessment of Metal Structure of Shipbuilding Crane is established. In this expert system, the theory and method concerning safety assessment is stored in the Knowledge Base. At the same time, a Fuzzy Inference System is built to copy the process of specialists. The expert system is based on CLIPS and VC++, and the software is user-friendly and easy to operate.In section six, the paper's main research work and achievement are summarized generally, and the forecast to the research work and development direction in the future is made.
