Nowadays, increasing attention were paid on energy shortage and environment problem, solar energy draw a lot of solicitude because of its clean and renewable energy form. Solar energy will be one of the most important energy source in the near future. The photovoltaic arrays will be decayed because of the permeation and spread of pore, which maybe cause the damage of arrays and the declined power output. The hot spot phenomenon is the most common fault, which lead to power drop and maybe cause terrible damage to arrays if the lack of immediate maintenance. So, it is much necessary to implement online fault detection of the arrays in photovoltaic system.According to the obvious different current and voltage characteristic of the photovoltaic panel, a novel fault detection method based on current-voltage characteristic was proposed after analyzing and comparing of several old methods. The new method can locate the fault position precisely in accordance with the analysis of the current and voltage change to the fault panel. The novel method incorporated with data fusion technology in order to decline the error of fault detection considering environment temperature, irradiance as well as wind velocity. Besides, the relationship between detection cost and precision was also analyzed in order to determine the practical implementation plan.The feasibility of this novel method was proved with the simulation results of the model in MATLAB/Simulink.
