In order to discuess the karyotype and evolutionary trend about Clematis L. and make a reference for the classification, the chromosome number, the number and position of SAT, the karyotype formulae, the karyotype, arm ratio, relatived length, centromeric index, karyotypc asymmetry etc of 16 species of Clematis L. were studied. The conclusions were as follows:1) The 16 species of Clematis had stable chromosome number,2n=16and 2n=32,basic number of chromosome was 8,C. terniflora was tetraploidy, the others were all diploid.2) The 16 species of Clematis chromosomes were mainly composed by median region chromosome (m),submedinal region chromosome (st) and terminal region chromosome (t).Their average arm ratio changed from 1.80 to 3.31.3) C. fruticosa,C. lanuginose,C. apilfolia,C. huchouensis,C. otophora,C. lasiandra,C. shenlung chiaensis, C. florida.var.plena. D.,C. fusca,C. crispa,C. viticella,C. ternifora belonged to type 2A, which was very symmetrial and a primitive type. C. heneiyi,C. integrifolia,C. japonanca,C. macropetala belonged to type 2B, which were more advanced than the other plants.4) The result from cluster analysis showed that the 16 species of Clematis chromosomes could be grouped under three heads. The first type included C. huchouensis,C. lasiandra,C. florida.varplena.D., C. ternifora,C. integrifolia,C. viticella; The second type included C. lasiandra,C. apilfolia,C. heneryi,C. macropetala,C. shenlungchiaensis; The third type included C. fusca,C. crispa,C. fruticosa,C. otophora,C. japonanca.
