Biological soil crusts widely cover in arid and semiarid region, the region and play asignificant role in this ecological system. The growth and development of biological soilcrusts promote nutrient content, influence of moisture distribution, increase the soil stabilityagainst water and wind erosion. Applying artificial technology to achieve the rapid cultivationof biological soil crust is promising to be a low input but high efficient soil and waterconservation method. Typical moss-dominated crust samples were collected in MU US SandyLand to carry out indoor and outdoor culture on the control of light intensity, temperature, water, fertilization and other environmental factors. Finally the key factors of moss crustsoptimal combination of rapid cultivation were explored and provided theory basis forengineering application. The main results are as follows:1,Indoor culture: moisture was an important restriction factor of moss growth. All indexof high irrigating frequency treatment was higher than low. The moss optimum growthtemperature and light intensity were25℃and12000lx respectively. Knop nutrient solutionimproved the moss chlorophyll a content of high irrigating frequency treatment in15℃and25℃. The best factors combination for indoor culture was the treatment of"25℃+12000lxlight intensity+watering/2days+Knop nutrient solution" or "25℃+12000lx light intensity+watering/2days+without Knop nutrient solution".2,Outdoor culture: the best factors combination for outdoor culture was the treatment of"film-covered+sunshade+high irrigating frequency+Knop nutrient solution". This treatmenthad the best moisture environment. Others were significantly affected by the limitation ofmoisture. Moss of the film-covered+without sunshade treatment influenced by hightemperature without plants growth during observation. Knop nutrient solution had nosignificant effect on the moss growth and organic carbon content. The influence of the lighton the moss growth was concealed by water. The content of soil organic carbon and moss density remained the same trend. Control of the four factors had little effect on the content ofuronic acid, DNA, humic-like and protein.3,The best growth of moss plant morphological in indoor and outdoor culture weresimilar. Individual plants were high, strong and viridian. The morphology of mosses had largecontact area with the air and was helpful for gas exchange of photosynthesis and respiration. The plant ability of preventing evaporation and drought was weak. Plant moisture evaporatedquickly. Plant had poor ability of light radiation tolerance. Therefore, the morphology of themoss had poor survivability in the wild.
