Objective: To compare the essential oil quality of different samples of Olibanum and Myrrha essential oil,and do some preliminary study about its transdermal absorption. Methods: According with the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2010 edition),the total volatile oil of Olibanum and Myrrha was extracted. GC-MS method was used to analysis its quality and summarize its common compositions. The Franz diffusion cell was taken as model, rat back skin was used as transdermal barrier to study Olibanum and Myrrha essential oil's transdermal absorption. GC-MS method was used again to determine the composition of their penetration. The effect of different concentrations of Azone and propylene glycol to essential oil's transdermal absorption was studied. Results: 3 samples of Olibanum have 3 kinds of common compositions, No.2 has the maximum of volatile oil; 5%Azone+10%PG group had the most influential effect to Olibanum essential oil transdermal absorption, the value of ER was 7.65; 3 samples of Myrrha have 12 kinds of common compositions, No.1 has the maximum of volatile oil; 5%Azone +2%PG group had the most influential effect to Myrrha essential oil transdermal absorption, the value of ER was 13.68; 3% Azone played the strongest role on the permeability ofβ-elemene, Azone united PG did not enhance the role of permeability. Conclusions: The results apply some evidences and data for formulating the quality standards and external dosage forms of Olibanum and Myrrha.
