ObjectiveTo observe and study the short-term effect in the cases of Canal Wall Down Tympanomastoidectomy (CWDT), whose mastoid cavity was obliterated and the posterior canal wall was reconstructed by the the autologous bone pate.MethodRetrospective analysis 12 cases (14 ears) with chronic otitis media which underwent Canal Wall Down Tympanomastoidectomy, and in the same period, canal wall reconstruction and mastoid obliteration with the autologous mastoid cortex bone pate.ResultFollow-up 3 months to 1 year after the operation, the external canal displayed almost normal appearance without collapse and narrow. The implanted eardrums were clear and grew well without perforation. Compare with the cases which were operated by CWDT without obliterating the mastoid cavity with autologous bone pate in our department, the healing period was much shorter and no epithelium-like ceruman was found.ConclusionIn the cases of CWDT, on the base of eradication of disease, mastoid obliteration and canal wall reconstruction simultaneous can effectively solve the problem remains by the postoperative mastoid cavity and the defective canal wall. After the operation, the almost normal external canal is conducive to the regeneration of the eardrums and to shorten the healing time. The trouble of long-term operation cavity cleaning can be reduced or avoided. This operation is the practical and the effective one of the surgeries which treat chronic otitis media. The mastoid cortex bone pate can be used as the one of ideal materials for obliteration.
