Quantitative measurement of coronary arterial morphological parameters is important for clinical diagnosis, planning of treatment or evaluation of interventional treatment of coronary artery diseases. X-ray coronary angiography (CAG) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) are two commonly used imaging modalities in clinical diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery diseases. Angiograms can show two-dimensional projections of vascular lumen and provide spatial geometrical information of vascular lumen. However, morphology and histological features of vessel wall as well as exact location of plaques can not be obtained. IVUS can display vascular cross sections and provide detailed structure information of vessel wall and plaques. Due to the complementarity of CAG and IVUS on coronary artery imaging and diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases, fusion of cross-sectional information of vascular lumen provided with IVUS images lumen and ultrasonic catheter's spatial geometrical information obtained from CAG images can overcome disadvantages of vessel reconstruction with IVUS or CAG images separately and accomplish true recovery of coronary vessels. Based on such a reconstruction, more accurate quantitative measurement of morphological parameters for coronary vessels can be implemented. In this dissertation, quantitative measurement of coronary vessel segments'morphological parameters (including vessel segment length, cross-sectional area, volume, curvature, torsion and plaque volume) and hemodynamic parameters (mainly distribution of local vessel wall shear stress) based on reconstructed vessel model from IVUS and CAG images and analysis of the relationship between morphological parameters and hemodynamic parameters are addressed. Experimental results with clinical images validated the method. The advantage of this method is that true recovery of vascular morphology ensures the accuracy of quantitative measurements.
