| Objective: The purpose of this study was to learn the current status of reproductive health and influencing factors of sexual behavior among adolescents in Hubei Province so as to provide scientific evidence for sexual education and reproductive health interventions.Methods: Cluster sampling was used. A questionnaire survey was conducted among students aged 8-21 years old chosen from 15 primary and secondary schools in Wuhan and Macheng. The questionnaire contained physical development status, reproductive health-related knowledge, psychological status and behaviors. SAS9.1 was used to do data analysis, including descriptive analysis, Chi-square test, t test and logistic regression.Results: There were 5771 adolescents completed the questionnaire: 1155 pupils, 2709 junior school students and 1907 senior high school students. The ratio of male to female was 1.18 to 1.①Physical development status: The median age of menarche was 12.47, and the median age of first spermatorrhea was 14.25. Adolescents in Wuhan were 0.79 and 0.21 years earlier than Macheng.②Knowledge: The cognition level of knowledge among girls was higher than boys, while the students from Macheng were lower than Wuhan's. Correct answer rate of all questions among pupils were below 50%. Respondents knew the route of transmission of AIDS and pregnancy well, as accuracy was more than 60%; while they had a poor understanding (40%) of non-transmission of AIDS and other common STDs, and they did worst on knowledge of contraception.③Psychological status: Nearly half of youngsters held a correct awareness of menarche/spermatorrhea. Adolescents held a more open attitude of communication with opposite sex, love-related content in the media, love and sexual behaviors among youth when they become older.④Behaviors: There was 1.68% of respondents ever had sexual intercourse, and only one student reported have had abortion. The rate of Sexual assault was 5.74%, however, 20.36% of respondents did not know how to fight with abuser and 26.21% lacked ability to reject.⑤Influencing factors: The results of Logistic regression indicated that sexual behaviors was associated with those who smoke, those who addicted to alcohol, those whose father ever talked about puberty with them, those who considering people opposite sex like communicating with him/her, those who want to watch love-related contents in media, those who did not refuse others'unreasonable demands and those who were in favor of sexual behaviors among middle school students.Conclusion: There was a trend of advancement of sexual development among adolescents in Hubei Province. The level of awareness of reproductive health knowledge among adolescents in Hubei was low, their attitude to sex was to be open, and the occurrence of sexual behavior was rare. The primary influencing factors on sexual behaviors contained individual factor such as alcohol use, family, peer factors and social factors, etc. It is urgency to carry out a systematic and comprehensive reproductive health education among adolescents to promote their reproductive health. |
