Objective We examined the level of VIP,IL-5 and histamine in the serum of CIU group and compared with normal control group in order to determine the relationship of neuropsychiatric factors in the pathogenesis of CIU. Methods 46 cases diagnosed CIU patients and 34 healthy volunteers randomly selected (November 2008~April 2009) in our clinic. ELISA method was used to detect and make a comparison between VIP,IL-5 and histamine in the serum of 46 patients of CIU and 34 normal people. Statistical software package for statistical SPSS 17.0 was used.T test was used to make a comparison between VIP,IL-5 and histamine in the serum of 46 patients of CIU and 34 normal people and linear correlation analysis was used to make a comparison between VIP,IL-5 and histamine in the serum of 46 patients of CIU. Significance level a=0.05. Results The serum level of VIP,IL-5 and histamine in CIU group were elevated than control group(P<0.05, P<0.01). The serum level of VIP and histamine in CIU group are positive correlated(r=0.343,P<0.05). There was no correlation between the serum level of VIP and IL-5(r=-0.040,P>0.05)and the serum level of IL-5 and histamine (r=-0.057,P>0.05).Conclusions The results further confirm that histamine in the key role in the pathogenesis of CIU. Histamine could induce or aggravate CIU by releasing VIP,and neuropsychological factors may lead the occurrence and recidivation of CIU in this way. On the one hand, CIU may be induced by neuropsychological factors in this way, on the other hand, CIU will increase the psychological burden of patients and stimulate the further release of VIP, which further aggravate the disease, creating a vicious cycle, which may be One of the reasons of CIU chronic recurrent. This study showed that patients with CIU serum IL-5 levels were significantly higher, suggesting that there may be Th2 hyperthyroidism with CIU patients, but in the pathogenesis of CIU, whether VIP play a role in the balance of Thl/Th2 subsets, needs further study.
