Objective To evaluate the value of Gemstone spectral imaging with Metal Artifact Reduction System (MARs) in removing metal shadow puppet. Materials and methods The solution containing iodine contrast agent broke up into eight different concentrations (mg/ml), which was loaded into the hard plastic pipe phantom. Bore diameter of the hard plastic pipe phantom was 6 millimetres. Every tube containing contrast agent phantom, which was loaded into mould of plastics or the soft tissues of the pig with the metallic implants artifacts, was scanned by Gemstone spectral imaging or the Conventional scan. The former was to rebuilded by Gemstone spectral imaging with single Mono or Mono+MARs. The CT value of the agent tube, which was Measured with Different ways to scan, was used for multiple comparison. Evaluation methods included subjective evaluation and objectively evaluation. Results In the condition of the same CT Dose Index CT(CTDI), while the position from the metallic implants artifacts were equal or farther than 2cm and the tube concentration were 1.0mg/ml, 2.0mg/ml,5.0mg/ml or 10.0mg/ml,the CT value of the tube which was scanned by Gemstone spectral imaging with Mono+MARs and the CT value were no obvious difference. But the Conventional scan and Gemstone spectral imaging with Mono of the tube can basically remove metal shadow puppet while the position from the metallic implants artifacts were equal or farther than 4cm and the tube concentration were 1.0mg/ml,2.0mg/ml,5.0mg/ml or 10.0mg/ml. While the position from the metallic implants artifacts were equal or farther than 4cm and the tube concentration were 20.0 mg/ml or 30.0mg/ml,the CTp value of the tube which was scanned by Gemstone spectral imaging with Mono+MARs of 80Kev,100 Kev,120 Kev,140 Kev and the CTa value were no obvious difference. But the Conventional scan of and Gemstone spectral imaging with Mono of the tube can basically remove metal shadow puppet while the position from the metallic implants artifacts were equal or farther than 6cm and the tube concentration were 20.0 mg/ml or 30.0mg/ml. Conclusion The artifact of metallic implants could be reduced obviously by Gemstone spectral imaging with Mono+MARs,which created the whole new CT imaging of the metallic implants artifacts.
