Objective:This study was designed to detect the expression of CtBP1 in esophageal cancer. Methods:Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expression of CtBP1 in 57 esophageal cancer tissues. Of 57 cases of esophageal cancer, there were 46 cases of squamous carcinomaⅡcases of adenocarcinoma,Ⅱcases ofⅠstage,23cases ofⅡstage,23 cases ofⅢstage,41 cases of lymph node metastasis and 16 cases of no lymph node metastasis. And there were 30 cases of corresponding non-tumor normal tissues for comparison. Results:Of 57 cases of esophageal cancer,90%(51/57) cases showed positive for CtBP1.The positive expressions for CtBP1 protein of the cases of squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were 85.9% and 90.9%, without statistical significance (p=0.682). The positive expressions for CtBP1 protein of the cases ofⅠstage,Ⅱstage andⅢstage were 90.9%,82.6% and 82.6%, without statistical significance (p=0.334). The positive expressions for CtBP1 protein of the cases of lymph node metastasis and no lymph node metastasis were88.3%,87.5%, with no statistical significance (p=0.675). In the 30 cases of corresponding non-tumor normal tissues, the positive expressions for CtBP1 protein was 96.7%, with no statistical significance (p=0.667). The positive expressions for p16 protein in the tissues of squamous carcinoma and adenocarcinoma were 49%,44%, respectively. And there was no statistical significance (p=0.687). The positive expressions for p16 protein in the tissues ofⅠstage,Ⅱstage andⅢstage were 65.5%,36.6% and 22.3%, respectively. And there was statistical significance (p=0.008). The positive expressions for p16 protein in the tissues of lymph node metastasis and no lymph node metastasis were 32.1% and 59% respectively.. And there was statistical significance (p=0.023). In the 30 cases of corresponding non-tumor normal tissues, the positive expressions for p16 protein was 80%, with statistical significance (p=0.003). The expression of CtBP1 and p16 had negative correlation(P<0.05, r=-0.381).Conclusions:The expression of p16 protein was associated with the carcinogenesis and development of esophageal cancer. CtBP1 can serve as the repressor of p16 and the potential target for the treatment and prognosis of esophageal cancer.
