Refusal speech act has been one of the hottest issues in the language study. The focuses of studies on the refusal speech act lies in several facets, for instance, apologizing, complimenting, requesting, wish expressions and so on. It lacks the systematic study on the refusal speech act. This thesis is intended to study strategies of refusal speech act used by Chinese and Russian students. It is based on Austin and Searle's speech act theory, Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, and Gu Yueguo's politeness principles, with define method,classification,quantitative analysis method, contrast method, induction to study. This thesis aims to explore similarities and differences in strategies of Refusal Speech Act used by Chinese and Russian students, and find the deep motivation of cultural about the formation of similarities and differences.This study will be good for promoting the research of refusal speech act and helping a better understanding of culture in Chinese and Russian, also it could advance the communication of cross-cultural. Otherwise, it could have a contribution in learning Chinese teaching for learners oversea.This study consists of five chapters.Chapter 1——Preface. This chapter introduces the reason of topics, objective and significance, and briefly generalizes the achievements our predecessors have made. Then it explains the research theory, method and the linguistic material sources of this study. At last it introduces the basic framework and main contents of this study.Chapter 2——Related concepts of refusal speech act. This chapter mainly introduces the definition of refusal, characteristic of refusal, the initiating acts of refusing, refusal strategy and classification of refusal strategy. This classification of refusal strategy is the most important issue in this chapter.Chapter 3——Expedition on strategies of refusal speech act used by Chinese and Russian students. This chapter mainly introduces corpus collection methods, design of Discourse Completion Test questionnaire, participants' introduction, corpus collection process, corpus analysis, results and statistical analysis. The results of the quantitative study are demonstrated and discussed on the basis of the data processed through Frequency statistics in SPSS 17.0 and Microsoft Excel. Then explore similarities and differences in strategies of Refusal Speech Act used by Chinese and Russian students through social status, social distance and gender.Chapter 4——Cultural psychological analysis on strategies of refusal speech act used by Chinese and Russian students. This chapter is intended to discuss the deep cultural factors about formation of similarities and differences in the fact of strategies of refusal speech act used by Chinese and Russian students. It analysis consists of three respects: the national character, the mode of thinking and the values.Chapter 5——Conclusion. Briefly summarizes the main points in this thesis, innovations and breakthroughs.
