The Application Of Frame Semantics To Meaning Gap Filling In Translation

It is not possible for language to present everything in communication due to its own limit and economical principle, and the language is always partly retained and partly given up. Therefore, meaning gap is inevitably caused. Translation is an interactive information transference activity participated together by original writer, translator and reader. How to handle the meaning gap to create a translated text consistent with source text and meeting the readers'expectations has become an issue worth discussing.Frame semantics provides an encyclopedia knowledge framework based on the experience. The linguistic expressions serve as the trigger of the whole frame, and the frame activated means that each slot is filled by concepts or the entities in the real scene. This paper introduces this theory into the translation study and takes two English versions of Biancheng as a case to make a contrastive study. It intends to explore its application to the meaning gap filling in mental level. Meanwhile, a novel perspective is expected to provide for translation study.The thesis is divided into five parts. The first chapter gives an introduction about the research background, purpose and significance also the whole structure of the paper. The second chapter is the literature review which looks back to the origin and evolvement of frame semantics and learns its general research status. In addition, it expounds the connotation of frame and the meaning gap in translation and links them closely in theory. Chapter 3 is the application of frame semantics to Biancheng English visions. Firstly a brief introduction is done including the position of Biancheng, reasons why it is treated as the corpus, the relevant translation study and some information about its English translated texts. Then the meaning gap in the case is discussed according to frame semantics by comparison and analysis from three respects: linguistic structure, meaning construction and the culture. Chapter 4 proposes three strategies on the practical foundation of the former chapter and explains in details with corpus. The last one arrives at a conclusion and gives suggestions for further study.
