An Exploration Of Gender Perspective In Contemporary Chinese Translation Studies

In the 1970s, feminists began to ally themselves with other theories to attack masculine phallus culture, and substituted gender for sex by obliterating their feminine characteristics, thinking that it was gender difference that led to women's subordinate status.With the combination of translation studies and feminism in the "Cultural Turn" of translation studies, the feminist translation theory came into being. Feminism introduced gender perspective, which is quite new, into translation studies. From then on, there has been a flourish in the feminist translation practice, feminist translation theory and translation criticism, all of which have gained huge influence in the west, and have made great achievements.With the introduction of feminism and feminist translation theory since the late 1980s, more and more scholars pay attention to feminist translation studies. However, The research results of translation studies in gender perspective show that the influences of gender perspective on Chinese translation studies are mainly the introduction and combing of the feminist translation theory, few of them makes a systematic study of Chinese female translators'translation in gender perspective. Chinese translators'gender awareness and translation strategies are milder than that of western feminist translators in translation.Influenced by feminism and feminist translation theory, the gender awareness of part of Chinese translators, female translators in particular, which was dim and unconscious originally, is aroused. However, because of different social, cultural, and historical backgrounds, Chinese translators'gender awareness and translation strategies are much milder than that of western feminist translators in translation, which are too intense and radical. And in comparison, the perspective of androgyny is more suitable for Chinese translators and Chine's context, because it can help to overcome feminist translators'extremeness by the demand of empathy, which requires translators to think from the perspective of the opposite sex.The thesis consists of five parts. Part one is a general introduction of the whole thesis The theoretical background, purpose, methodology, and significance of research are all inclusive. Part two makes a literature review of feminism, gender studies, feminist translation studies and practice in gender perspective abroad and in China, as well as the limitation of feminist translation studies and the perspective of androgyny. Part three is a case study of the two groups of Chinese female translators' translation in the May Fourth Movement and in the period since 1980s in the perspective of gender and makes a contrast of the two groups of female translators in gender perspective. Part four makes a summary of Chinese translators'performance in translation in gender perspective and their differences from western feminist translators in translation, and analyzes the causes of the differences and proves that the perspective of androgyny is more suitable for Chinese translators and translation studies in grasping the proper degree in performance. Part five is the conclusion of the research, which summarizes the thesis and points out the limitations of the research.The thesis focuses on China's female translators' translation practices in two different periods, analyzes the differences between Chinese translators and the western feminist translators in translation from the perspective of gender, and then studies the causes of differences, and explores the function of the androgynous perspective in translation. It is concluded through theoretical analysis, that the perspective of androgyny is more suitable for guiding the sound development of Chinese translation practice and translation studies.
