The atypical directive sentence is a special sentence. When it used to ask for something from the hearers, it also gives an amount of information at the same time. And it has a very close connection with Chinese imperative sentence on both function and form. The atypical directive sentence has a frequently-used and characteristic structure in modern Chinese. Under the guidance of speech acts theory, systemic functional linguistics and other relevant theories, this dissertation describes and explains the atypical directive sentence from many aspects, such as pragmatics, semantic and speech-realizated. Then the dissertation explains the special cultural function that the atypical directive sentence has and points out the developing direction in the future.Firstly, this dissertation defines the term "the atypical directive sentence" from the functional angle. The author regards it as a kind of imperative sentence in modern Chinese which gives the directives incompletely. In the course of using, it not only retains the intrinsic function but also extends some new functions.Secondly, the atypical directive sentences have been classified according to the different degrees. Then the author explains the meanings that these sorts behaved and the relation among them.Thirdly, the dissertation discusses the speech-realizated of the atypical directive sentences. Pointing out that the modal words, adverbs, verb-repeated, idiom and other grammatical means can affect the strength of directive sentences. Moreover, some pragmatic means can also make the same effect on the atypical directive sentence, such as the status between the speakers and the hearers, and the context restrictions. It also makes a semantic analysis about these sentences, and emphasizes the different semantic meaning and the characteristics of the subject. The dissertation also explains the semantic focus of the complex form in the atypical directive sentences.Finally, the author also introduces the cultural function of the atypical directive sentence and presents its important value in social communication, the trend it will shows, the available research value and space.The author hopes that issue of the atypical directive sentences can offer another angle to classify the types of Chinese imperative and give a certain extent explanation to the non-correspondance between lingual function and form.
