This paper claims that there's possibility of comparison between A Tale of Two Cities and Quatre-Vingt-Treize because of the same background. This paper consists of four chapters.Chapter One intends to reveal the historical truth of the great French revolution and the fiction of the historical event made up by Charles Dickens and Hugo. In this chapter, it points out that no matter A Tale of Two Cities or Quatre-Vingt-Treize, they are both novels and there are fiction and fabricaion. Therefore, these two novels are not totally equal to the great French revolution.Chapter Two is a research on narrative perspective. Since A Tale of Two Cities and Quatre-Vingt-Treize are both introspectional works of the great French revolution, the writers'narrative perspective seems to be very significant.Chapter Three resarches on the personage's image-building.There is the same tendency on the characterization between A Tale of Two Cities and Quatre-Vingt-Treize that the heroes in the novels are the spokesmen of the writers'thoughts. This paper intends to make a comparative study of the characters to analyze the ideas contained beyond the characters, accordingly the motivation of the authors'reasons to create such characters will be analyzed..Chapter Four researchs the humanitarianism presented in these two novels. The ideology purport of the two books are both humanitarianism which was different and has their own features in the two books. This paper indicates that the humanitarianism of Charles Dickens was mainly bases on class antagonisms, so the author asserts the reconciliation between classes and "love" should be the supreme guide of it. The humanitarianism of Hugo was based on the political system, republicanism, so Hugo believes the value of the great French revolution lies in established republicanism. Therefore, there were tendency of terrorism during the revolution, however the fundamental purpose was correct. To rectify the biases in the French revolution, Hugo proposed the thought "above the absolutely right revolution, there is an absolutely right humanitarianism".
