In ancient China, there has long been the theme of painting monkeys. This paper analyzes Yi yuanji's monkey paintings, the painter in Song Dynasty, to explore people's care and love for monkey paintings from ancient times to the present. By research, we find it necessary to analyze the successive monkey theme paintings, and also which is of great artistic and humanistic value.Painting monkeys is closely related to the culture of that time. The popular painting style in Han Dynasty based mainly on stone carvings. While through stone carvings of monkey subject, we can imagine Han people's humor in that society. In addition, the frescoes of monkey theme in Xinjiang basically express the ideas of Buddhism, and also given priority to the wide use of brilliant colors as the basic technical style.This paper specially analyzes Yi Yuanji's painting techniques in monkey paintings. And also by studying popular painters Huang and Xu's style, we explore monkey theme paintings. Particularly the paper focuses on analyzing the technical expression of composition, pen and color. With the gradual decline of feudal society after mid--Tang Dynasty, the cultural spirit of Song Dynasty increasingly towards introspection, inaction, and literati spirit.On the bases of research on cultural background of Song Dynasty, this article analyzes Yi's monkey paintings by pictures analysis, literature research and other forms of analysis. While exploring the images of money in Yi's paintings and its influence on future generations, the paper also sorts out the cultural backgrounds behind.
